Sustainability of the fishing industry

In ecology, sustainability describes how biological systems remain productive over time. It refers to the balance of a species with the resources of its environment. By extension, it applies to the exploitation of a resource below its renewal limit.

In short, sustainability is about meeting the needs of the current generation without sacrificing the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Thus, according to Wandemberg, sustainability is a socio-ecological process characterized by a behavior in search of a common ideal. It is a term linked to the action of human beings in relation to their environment, it refers to the balance that exists in a species based on its environment and all the factors or resources it has to make possible the functioning of all its parts, without the need to damage or sacrifice the capabilities of another environment.

This concept is vital to the fishing industry, in particular, it has been widely used by leading conservation NGOs who have created a community of best practices for improving global fisheries to inform our sourcing commitments and provide us with the tools to help improve the fisheries we source from.

From Pescatore Seafood we would like to point out that we are committed to participate in the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) supplier roundtables and, as a FishChoice supplier member, our company is part of a fishing community of companies, NGOs and other like-minded individuals who are committed to promoting the sustainability of seafood products.  In particular, our participation through the FishChoice platform that provides us with all the information about the origin of fish products publicly available and transparent in its origin, as well as identifying the current sustainability status of our fish products, is fundamental.

FishChoice partners with leading global organizations that rate and certify seafood products for environmental sustainability. FishChoice compares the sources of our products against that information and updates us when that information changes so that we can ensure that our staff and our customers have the most up-to-date information available.

The fishing industry has a huge impact on the health of the oceans, but companies cannot take action without information that is accessible, understandable and reliable.

Understanding the sustainability status of your sources, where to buy seafood that meets your sustainability commitment and whether fishery improvement projects (FIPs) are making progress is essential for sustainability commitments to generate impact. And as fishing companies are asked to expand their sustainability efforts to include legality, traceability and social responsibility, their need for useful and credible information is only increasing.

Online tools provide thousands of fishing companies with the practical information they need to advance sustainability.

FishChoice finds new ways to solve persistent information challenges in the sustainable seafood movement. By speaking the languages of business and conservation, we turn information into action by making it clear and easily accessible online.

Also in our struggle to ensure the sustainability of our products, we have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in Peru to join the Mahi-Mahi FIP in that country. Peru's Mahi Mahi fishery supports 4,200 fishermen and serves as a key link in the marine food chain, providing food for sharks, dolphins and other ocean predators. It is also one of the world's leading sources of Mahi Mahi and, like Ecuador, a major exporter to the United States.

To guarantee the consumption of future generations is our goal, we continue to promote all necessary measures to guarantee the sustainability of species and implement real policies for safe fishing.
